NYSC Mourns Loss of 3 Corps Members in Camps – 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I)

21:49:00 0
National Youth Service Corps, NYSC mourns the loss of three Corps members in camps.
NYSC mourns loss of corps members
The National Youth Service Corps regrets the loss of three Corps members, Elechi Chinyerum Nwenenda, Oladepo Ifedolapo and Asuquo Ukeme Monday, during the on-gong 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) Orientation Course in Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara States respectively.

The death of the trio followed brief illnesses and after medical teams in the camps battled to save them in line with established procedures.
Their demise, coming in their prime time when they were bracing up for further roles towards advancing their respective families, the nation and the rest of humanity, came as a rude shock to us in the NYSC family.
On behalf of the Management, staff and Corps members nationwide, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased Corps members.
May the Almighty God grant them eternal rest and give their families and the rest of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.
While we mourn the demise of these Corps members, who, out of patriotic zeal, answered the clarion call to serve their fatherland, we are constrained to correct the impression of negligence being created in some quarters.
Management wishes to state that the welfare of Corps members has always remained topmost in the priorities of the Scheme, and we have continued to strive to give our best in that regard.
The policy of the Scheme regarding healthcare during Orientation course provides for the setting up of camp clinic manned by qualified Doctors and other Corps Health Personnel.
The clinics, which are also equipped with drugs and other basic facilities, are detailed to render round-the-clock medical services on camp with standing arrangement to refer and ensure immediate movement of patients to more sophisticated health facilities when necessary.
We want to inform the public that medical teams in our camps have always been guided by the procedures of practice and in the most professional ways possible.
However, in view of these unfortunate incidents in Bayelsa, Kano, and Zamfara states, Management has set up a high-powered committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the loss the Corps members.
Management appreciates the concern of stakeholders, and wishes to assure the general public, especially serving and prospective Corps members as well as parents and guardians that the Scheme will continue to take measures aimed at ensuring the security and general well being of youths enlisted to serve the nation on the platform of the Scheme.

NYSC 2016 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Camp To Open Jan 2017

nysc-batch-b2
The Board of the National Youth Service Corps has informed prospective corps members that Orientation Camp for NYSC Batch “B” Stream 2 for 2016 may now commence in 2017. For this reason , camp reopens by Jan 2017.
This was made clear by the DG of NYSC  given assurance that prospective stream II corps members will be mobilized. He said that “the limited cumulative capacity of the Orientation camps nationwide necessitates a second stream Orientation course for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ which is being planned for January 2017”.

NYSC 2016 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Camp To Open January 2017

The Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, gave the assurance during his maiden parley with the media in Abuja.
Kazaure said this followed a Federal Government’s directive to that effect.
He said what was left of the provision made for mobilization of Corps members in the 2016 budget could only accommodate eighty-six thousand prospective Corps members.
The Director-General, however, added that following the federal government’s intervention, all the one hundred and seventy thousand prospective Corps members that successfully registered online are now being processed for 2016 Batch ‘B’.
“So far, we have received green light from the relevant government agencies to prepare for the mobilization of all qualified prospective Corps members.
“However, the limited cumulative capacity of the Orientation camps nationwide necessitates a second stream Orientation course for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ which is being planned for January 2017,” he said.
Kazaure lamented the failure of some states and local governments to discharge their statutory obligations to the Scheme pointing out that their attitude resulted in the limited capacity and quality of facilities in most Orientation camps across the country.
The Director-General stressed that the provision of Orientation camp facilities and post-camp accommodation and transport of Corps members were among the responsibilities of states and local governments as spelt out in the NYSC Act.
Others he enumerated include logistics support for inspection of Corps locations, material support for community development service and security of Corps members.
He, therefore, appealed to states and local governments that are not discharging their statutory obligations to reconsider their stance and give their support towards the success of the Scheme’s operations.

See 5 Ways to Maximize Your Time at NYSC camp(MUST READ)

23:28:00 0
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), an organization set up by the Nigerian government since 1973 to ensure Nigerian students give a mandatory one-year service upon graduation, recently issued out call-up letters to certain individuals who have qualified to join the last batch for the year. However, while these individuals are much elated to get the opportunity, seeing as completing the service year entitles one to employment, a number of them are perturbed as to how to cope with the three weeks “orientation” period spent in a military-controlled boot “camp” away from family and friends. Jumia Travel, therefore, suggests 7 ways prospective youth corpers can maximize their time at the NYSC camp.
NYSC-camp
Join the OBS
The Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS) is a great way to serve while in the camp. A very important unit of the camp, it will offer you opportunities to not only develop your editorial and media skills, you will get to know the key officers in the camp. It also gives you a measure of authority and allows you to get an exemption from some of the camp activities which you may be averse to.
Run a small business
You can actually make money while at the orientation camp. You can offer services such as hair dressing or laundry to others in the camp who need them for a fee or you can rent a stall at the Mami market and sell food items which most corpers need from day to day. It is a great way to hone your business skills before you are launched into the labour market.
Do an online course
The orientation period does not have to be all activities and socializing, you can further develop yourself on the side by registering and going through a short online course during your stay. The good thing about online learning is that it is flexible so you can actually plan it around the time that you will be leaving the camp.
Socialize and actually meet new people
The NYSC scheme was originally established to encourage oneness among citizens in the country and promote national unity. By sending these individuals to other states, the expectation is that they mix with people of other tribes, social and family backgrounds and learn the culture of the indigenes in the place they are posted. Rather than sticking to yourself all through the orientation process, use your spare time to actually fraternize and get to know the people in your platoon and camp as a whole. You would be surprised how many new things you will learn about Nigeria and what connections you may make for the future.
Start applying for jobs
The orientation period is not too early a time to start sending out your CVs to potential employers. The NYSC orientation can actually serve as an avenue for corpers to share job information and career resources, so take advantage of that and start early.

NYSC should be voluntary – Senator Shehu Sani

21:35:00 0
Senator Shehu Sani who represents Kaduna Central consistuency has advised the federal government to make the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme voluntary or increase funding and provide insurance to the scheme.

He said this after he met with the family of a NYSC member and consoled them. The youth corps member Lawal Kontagora was killed by unknown gunmen in Kaduna recently.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he was a 26-year-old, an NYSC member, serving at the Africdect information technology centre, Kaduna. He was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in the Malali area on October 17.
The concerned senator said: “This is not the first time, it has always been the case, when it happens, we mourn we condemn the action. This happened in my constituency and he is part of my constituency.
I have a duty to pursue this case to its logical conclusion. “If such things happen to others and they are being ignored, I virtually will not fold my arms and see this kind of things happen. “I am taking this issue to the National Assembly; we have to choose what to do and being a corps member. It is either the government makes the service year voluntary or there should be increased funding or insurance.’’
He also condemned the killing and asked security agencies in the state to fish out the culprits. The fact that the corps member was not protected, Sani said, “clearly shows how vulnerable the society is’’. “The very fact that we have not inherited a country that could not provide and protect us, shows that we should have been able to do better.
Our young people are neither safe in primary or secondary schools, nor safe in the university, they are also not safe after the university,’’ Sani said. Alhaji Lawal Umar Kontagora, who is the father of the slain young man, said he was quite impressed with the condolence visit by Senator Sani.
“He is our senator and for him to come and condole with us, we are very appreciative. I pray justice will be done for the loss of my son because it was a gruesome murder and it is very painful,’’ he said.
The Kaduna police command said three suspects had been arrested in connection with the alleged murder and according to ASP Aliyu Usman, the public relations officer, an investigation had commenced into the matter.
Meanwhile, A NYSC member named Ene Gertrude Adole who died was laid to rest in Benue three weeks ago. On Monday, September 26, Ene Gertrude Adole died and her friends and family took to social media to pay tribute to her and wish her well where she is going.

NYSC corps members get N3 million each from CBN
The disbursement of funds worth N3 million each to serving and ex-Corps members, was carried out in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), at a ceremony which took place on Thursday in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, represented by the Deputy Governor (Corporate Services}, Alhaji Sulieman Barau, said that the programme was to ensure that the creative energies of the over 64 million Nigerian youths are harnessed to stimulate growth, address restiveness and promote economic development.
He said that the programme was open to 18 to 35 years-old serving corps members, graduates or artisans.
The Managing Director of Heritage Bank, Mr Ifie Sekibo, urged the CBN to expand the programme to accommodate more qualified youth entrepreneurs.
Quoting from the National Bureau of Statistics, Sekibo, who was represented by the bank’s Executive Director, Corporate Banking, Mrs Mary Akpobome, said there were about 64 million unemployed youths in the country.
Sekibo said the bank currently has over 7,000 business proposals, thus it will require additional funding to cater for the needs of Nigerians.
He added that about N3 billion has been set aside at the initial stage for the programme which is why each participant is getting N3 million each, as the pilot programme is for a thousand people.
In his reaction, the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Sulaiman Kazaure, thanked the CBN for supporting efforts to empower the youths.
Kazaure noted that the launch of the YEDP would, among other things, create room for increasing the number of beneficiaries of the entrepreneurship training and venture prize competition to make meaningful impact.
