NYSC should be voluntary – Senator Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani who represents Kaduna Central consistuency has advised the federal government to make the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme voluntary or increase funding and provide insurance to the scheme.

He said this after he met with the family of a NYSC member and consoled them. The youth corps member Lawal Kontagora was killed by unknown gunmen in Kaduna recently.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he was a 26-year-old, an NYSC member, serving at the Africdect information technology centre, Kaduna. He was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in the Malali area on October 17.
The concerned senator said: “This is not the first time, it has always been the case, when it happens, we mourn we condemn the action. This happened in my constituency and he is part of my constituency.
I have a duty to pursue this case to its logical conclusion. “If such things happen to others and they are being ignored, I virtually will not fold my arms and see this kind of things happen. “I am taking this issue to the National Assembly; we have to choose what to do and being a corps member. It is either the government makes the service year voluntary or there should be increased funding or insurance.’’
He also condemned the killing and asked security agencies in the state to fish out the culprits. The fact that the corps member was not protected, Sani said, “clearly shows how vulnerable the society is’’. “The very fact that we have not inherited a country that could not provide and protect us, shows that we should have been able to do better.
Our young people are neither safe in primary or secondary schools, nor safe in the university, they are also not safe after the university,’’ Sani said. Alhaji Lawal Umar Kontagora, who is the father of the slain young man, said he was quite impressed with the condolence visit by Senator Sani.
“He is our senator and for him to come and condole with us, we are very appreciative. I pray justice will be done for the loss of my son because it was a gruesome murder and it is very painful,’’ he said.
The Kaduna police command said three suspects had been arrested in connection with the alleged murder and according to ASP Aliyu Usman, the public relations officer, an investigation had commenced into the matter.
Meanwhile, A NYSC member named Ene Gertrude Adole who died was laid to rest in Benue three weeks ago. On Monday, September 26, Ene Gertrude Adole died and her friends and family took to social media to pay tribute to her and wish her well where she is going.
