NUC SCRAPS
National Universities Commission, NUC, has revealed that it scrapped sub-degree diploma programmes in the Nigerian university system.
This was contained in a statement by the commission’s Deputy Director of Information, Mrs Adebukola Olatunji, in Abuja Monday.
According to him, the ban was part of the decisions at an interactive session of the Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, with vice chancellors of federal, state and private universities.
Following this development, universities have been directed to begin the process of winding down sub-degree diplomas.
“Rasheed told vice-chancellors that running sub-degree diplomas was not the business of universities, but that of polytechnics,” the statement added.
The executive secretary reminded them that the Federal Government, in 2001, issued a circular stating that such diplomas could not be used for employment or promotion in the public service.
“Rather than stretch facilities to run sub-degree programmes, universities should direct their energies toward their primary function of producing high level manpower for the economy, by strengthening their part-time programmes.

NUC List Of Unaccredited Courses
List of courses that have not been accredited in Nigerian universities have been released – A certificate issued for those courses will be considered void
– The university of Abuja has the highest number of unaccredited courses The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released a list of some courses that have not been accredited.
The unaccredited courses pose serious danger to students who study them as the certificates issued by these universities for the courses will not be officially recognized.
Premium Times reports that 2016 accreditation status report indicated that these unaccredited courses were taught in 37 out of 143 universities in the country. The Quality Assurance Department of the NUC is in charge of accrediting courses in the universities.
The NUC insists that for a course to be accredited, it must meet the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) that has been stipulated by the commission. Some of the requirements include: “qualified faculty members, good learning environment and adequate teaching materials – equipment, books and journals”.
According to the NUC, accreditation is necessary to ensure “employers and other members of the community that Nigerian graduates of all academic programmes have attained an acceptable level of competency in their areas of specialization.” It also says it is also important to certify courses to assure “the international community that the programmes offered in Nigerian Universities are of high standards and that graduates of the institutions are adequate for employment and further studies.”
According to the commission, the pre-accreditation process include “drawing up a list of academic programmes to be certified, compilation of list of panel chairmen/members, time-tabling, budgeting and organizing the accreditation coordination meeting for panel chairmen and members in a simulation workshop.”
The post-accreditation activities include “analyzing accreditation reports (technical and administrative), ranking of programmes and universities based on their accreditation status, publishing of accreditation status of programmes, issuance of certificates to programmes that earned Full and Interim accreditation results.”
According to Premium Times, 13 federal universities, 16 state universities and eight private universities were running courses that had not been accredited. Some of the high profile institutions include University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Benin, University of Jos, University of Calabar. The biggest casualty seems to be the University of Abuja which has 15 of its courses, including Law, unaccredited. NUC Frowns at Diploma Programmes in Varsities

17:48:00 0
National Universities Commission (NUC) to stop universities in the country from running Diploma programmes, urging them to adhere strictly to their approved mandates of awarding degrees and higher degrees.
NUC to stop diploma
The National Universities Commission (NUC) says universities in the country would soon stop diploma programmes run at undergraduate level, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, said in Abuja yesterday.
He said this when he received  the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr Masaudu Kazaure in his office.
Prof. Rasheed said only polytechnics had the statutory right to run diploma programmes.
He said the federal government had earlier issued a circular as far back as 2000 prohibiting the use of Ordinary Diploma certificates either in the promotion or employment of staff in the civil service, adding that the commission would soon notify universities to stop the programmes.
“We are going to formally put a deadline on it, that there should be no diploma again to be run by universities, let us allow those that are statutorily allowed to run diploma programmes, the polytechnics, to continue with them,” he said.
While assuring of his determination to strengthen vocational education in the country,  he said  the commission would collaborate with the NBTE  to develop a blueprint that would give polytechnics  the capacity  to run degree programmes on their own as obtainable in other countries.
Earlier, Dr. Kazaure noted that the visit was to congratulate the NUC executive secretary and seek areas of cooperation with the commission.
He dispelled rumours that the federal government had converted the Kaduna Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology to city universities.
Kazaure, who lauded the recent decision of the Council of Civil Service Establishments to remove the dichotomy between university degree and Higher National Diploma (HND), said the move, which would allow HND holders that have Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) to be at par with university graduates in the civil service, was a welcome development.

NUC- Medical Students Will spend 7 not 11 Years
Medical Students received some good news. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has discredited the reports that students of medicine in Nigerian universities would henceforth study for 11 years before obtaining an MBBS degree.
This was disclosed by the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, in Abuja.
According to him, the new Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS) for Medicine and Dentistry, which had since been made public by commission, only provides for a seven-year training, leading to the award of MBBS/MDS.
This was earlier reported: Medical Students to Spend 11 years
“A seven year MBBS programme that encompass a seamless four- year acquisition of the B.SC. Basic Medical Science with interest in either Anatomy/Physiology/Biochemistry.”
“At the end of seven years, students would have acquired the Bachelor of Medical Science, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. In case of dental programmes, students would have acquired a degree in Basic Dental Sciences and Bachelor of Dental Surgery.”
