Federal Univesity of Agriculture, Makurdi to Host Carnegie African Diapora Fellow
Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM) has been selected by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Programme (CADFP) to host an African Diaspora scholar from the United States to work with on a collaborative project in 2017.
Professor J.O. Igoli of College of Science, Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi together with Dr. Edith Onyeozili, a fellow from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) will lead the project which focusses on natural products chemistry; the popular/commonly used native mechanical herbs and plants, towards drug discovery and chemistry program curriculum development.
As contained in the communique issued by the Carnegie Corporation, the project is aimed at carefully investigating and selecting popular or used mechanical plants using chromatography and spectral methods to investigate their constituents and help standardize the use of such herbal drugs extracts and compounds obtained will be screened for reported activities in collaboration with biologists and researchers on tropical diseases.
It also stated that based on popularity of traditional medicine in Nigeria especially Benue state where the research will be conducted the project will involve qualitative and quantitative analysis of whole crude extracts from selected local medicinal plants to determine the phytochemical compositions, assessment of antioxidant activities of correlation of total phenolic content (TPC) of extracts and antioxidant, compounds isolation and drug discovery from local medicinal plants.
