BREAKING NEWS!! ASUU TO EMBARK ON AN INDEFINITE STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union has embarked on a nation-wide industrial action (excluding the University of Ilorin which has refused to partake in the action). The strike was as a result of the federal government to respond to their demands.

The Academic Staff Union said that the strike was due to the refusal of the federal government to implement the memorandum of action signed with it. as a result, they stated that the strike would be a nationwide action including all the Nigerian Universities (Federal and State). This announcement was made by the union after an executive meeting held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, on Sunday night (4th November 2018).

While speaking with journalists after the NEC meeting, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, the President of ASUU said that all effort to make the Federal Government to honour the agreement fell on deaf ears, so they had to proceed with the strike action as that seemed to be the only alternative.

He said, “Having patiently waited for action and meaningful negotiation with reasonable men using the principle of collective bargaining that ASUU at its NEC meeting in FUT Akure on the 3rd and 4th of November 2018,  resolved to resume the nationwide strike action which it suspended in September 2017 with immediate effect".

He said also said that the action will be total, comprehensive and indefinite. He said that the members of the Academic Staff Union will withdraw every of their services until the Federal Government fully implements all outstanding issues as contained in the MOA of 2017 and concludes the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements.

He also stated that they have been subjected to 20 years of continued re-colonization under alleged democracy in which all the ruling classes have been grouped among themselves in their various fractions they called political parties.

Prof. Biodun also alleged that the Federal government has little or no interest in the public universities as they usually send their children to private or foreign universities rather than the one in their own country.
