The aim of the project was to determine the main factors which govern the poor usage culture of electric power that results to more waste than usage of the inadequate supply from the National grid. The research was in two parts; the first part involved direct survey of power wastage within Makurdi, the second aspect was mainly an experiment to demonstrate how much heat is produced from incandescent or filament bulbs. From the survey, the team was able to estimate that at least 40% of public power supply in Nigeria is not efficiently utilised.
According to Dr. Barnabas Ikyothe lead researcher, the survey results from 53 houses showed that leaving only the security light bulbs on for 10hrs (7am to 5.0pm) amount to waste of about 5MW per day. Findings show that wastage occur when home owners leave their security light bulbs and electric appliances on, for part or all day long and the use of unnecessary high powered appliances. The experiment showed clearly that using incandescent bulbs amounts to users heating up their rooms or the environment and still cooling same down for comfort with electric fans and air conditions. The electric energy consumed by light bulbs left on in the day time and unused electronic appliances are wasted instead of conserving it for use by others who need it.
