ASUU PROMISES TO CALL OFF THE ONGOING STRIKE SOON

20:07:00 0

In an interview with the press men, the president of the academic staff union, prof. Biodun Ogunyemi stated that after their meeting, they will conclude when the ASUU strike will be called off.

He told the news men that they would be having a meeting soon. He also went on to say that they will let Nigerians know of their outcome (their conclusion from the meeting).

It's been over  two weeks since they embarked on the industrial action, demanding the government to fulfill a promise they made in 2009, in the quest of resolving the ongoing strike as at that time and everyone (especially the new students) is worried as to when the strike would be called off. The questions everyone is asking is whether or not the strike will be called off before January 2019 or students can still go back to school this year.

The exact duration of the strike is not known at the moment and will only be certain after the meeting, if all things play well as the president of ASUU had stated.

BREAKING NEWS!! ASUU TO EMBARK ON AN INDEFINITE STRIKE

11:05:00 0

The Academic Staff Union has embarked on a nation-wide industrial action (excluding the University of Ilorin which has refused to partake in the action). The strike was as a result of the federal government to respond to their demands.

The Academic Staff Union said that the strike was due to the refusal of the federal government to implement the memorandum of action signed with it. as a result, they stated that the strike would be a nationwide action including all the Nigerian Universities (Federal and State). This announcement was made by the union after an executive meeting held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, on Sunday night (4th November 2018).

While speaking with journalists after the NEC meeting, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, the President of ASUU said that all effort to make the Federal Government to honour the agreement fell on deaf ears, so they had to proceed with the strike action as that seemed to be the only alternative.

He said, “Having patiently waited for action and meaningful negotiation with reasonable men using the principle of collective bargaining that ASUU at its NEC meeting in FUT Akure on the 3rd and 4th of November 2018,  resolved to resume the nationwide strike action which it suspended in September 2017 with immediate effect".

He said also said that the action will be total, comprehensive and indefinite. He said that the members of the Academic Staff Union will withdraw every of their services until the Federal Government fully implements all outstanding issues as contained in the MOA of 2017 and concludes the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements.

He also stated that they have been subjected to 20 years of continued re-colonization under alleged democracy in which all the ruling classes have been grouped among themselves in their various fractions they called political parties.

Prof. Biodun also alleged that the Federal government has little or no interest in the public universities as they usually send their children to private or foreign universities rather than the one in their own country.

FG vs ASUU: Another Strike Might Looms Over Oct 31 Agreement

08:09:00 0

Another round of strike action is looming in the nation’s Universities as academic staff counts down to the deadline for the implementation of agreements reached with the government which led to the conditional suspension of its indefinite strike action in September.

The government had signed an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities as a result of the strike action embarked upon by the union to press the implementation of the memorandum of understanding entered into between both parties in 2013 as well as the 2009 agreement.

A timeline of October 2017 was reached between the government and the unions for the implementation of some components of the agreement, especially the payment of shortfall in salaries and Earned Academic Allowances.
But some lecturers informed The Nation that barely one week to the end of the October timeline, the government has not implemented any aspect of the agreement, even when they claimed during negotiation that implementation has commenced.

While suspending their strike action in September, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi had said that the union was suspending its action conditionally to pave way for government to commence implementation of the agreement, stressing that the union will not hesitate to resume the action if the government fail to meet its own aspect of the agreement.

One lecturer who would not want his name in print told The Nation that “the government has not done anything. We have not heard from them and it is just one week to the end of the October deadline. I can assure you that we are warming up and there is the possibility that from November 1, we will resume the suspended action.

“They (government) told our leaders during negotiations that they have prepared everything for the implementation. They were even brandishing some papers, especially on the earned Academic Allowance. But we have not seen anything nor heard from them.

“They were also supposed to carry our verification because of those who employed workers without permission so that the issue of shortfall in salary can be addressed. Many of us have been verified, but nothing has happened. We have not been paid. They should not take us die a ride because when we resume the suspension action not are not going to listen to any discussion.

However, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, however, declined to say whether or not the union will call out its members at the end of October if they are not satisfied with the level of implementation of the agreement.
Prof. Ogunyemi told The Nation over the telephone that members of the union will determine the next line of action based on the level of implementation of the agreement reached between the government and the unions.

He said both parties were making progress in the implementation of the memorandum of understating signed between them, adding that the union is still engaging the government and expressed the hope that the government will keep to their promise.

He said: “We are engaging them and we are making some few progress and we hope they will keep their promise. Otherwise, our members are ready to activate their action.
We are still in October, but we are on our guard.
We believe they will follow the process through and implement it fully. That is why we still engage them and we are talking. We are working with them and we hope they will continue to cooperate.

Asked whether they will embark on any Industrial action at the end of October, he said “I cannot say whether there will be any action at the end of October or not. It is what our members say that we shall do. I hope I am very clear? Our members shall determine what we shall do at the end of the deadline based on the level, of implementation”.

The government had promised to meet the demand of the unions with a promise to release of about N220 billion to the universities not later than October 2017 to fund the revitalisation of federal universities in the country and the payment of the shortfall in their salaries as well as payment of earned allowances which has accumulated.

WOW! ASUU may call off strike this week

20:04:00 0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may call off its one-month old strike this week.

President of the Union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has disclosed the industrial action has not ended yet, because ASUU was still ironing out some grey areas in the agreement with the federal government.

Ogunyemi assured the strike would be called off, as soon as the grey areas were resolved.

“We are still trying to iron out some grey areas with the government. Once we finish doing that, we will address the press,” he told The Nation.

ASUU’s leadership had another meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, last Friday to report the decisions of its members in accordance with the agreements between both parties.

At a conciliatory meeting with government, the union had agreed to go back to its members, to take a decision on the offer of government and revert back with a view to calling off or suspending the strike.

“Most of these issues stemmed from the 2009 agreement that government had ASUU and also from the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding that the government had with ASUU.

“Government is a continuum. Most of those issues were not issues that cropped up from the Buhari administration, we inherited them.

“Based on these discussions, ASUU leadership will consult with its organs and revert back to government within one week.

“They will consult with their organs with a view to calling off the strike. And we expect them to do that within one week, they will get back to government

“These are the highlights of the meeting and I can tell you that the meeting took place in very cordial atmosphere,” Ngige told newsmen after the meeting.

The meeting will be coming exactly a week since the lecturers shunned a meeting with the government delegation, saying such meeting was “unnecessary.”

The Ministers of Labour and Education, Chris Ngige and Adamu Adamu respectively are expected to lead the federal government delegation to the meeting.

We’ve not called off strike, still consulting —ASUU

16:54:00 0

There was a report, weekend, that the strike had been suspended after the Federal Government representatives led by Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, and Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, met with the leadership of the union in Abuja, Wednesday. But the National President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, told Vanguard on telephone, yesterday, that there was no truth in the alleged suspension of the strike.

Instead, he said the union was still consulting with the relevant stakeholders on the outcome of the meeting it had with government representatives. Asked when the union would meet again with government and when the National Executive Council, NEC, of ASUU would meet to take final decision, Ogunyemi said for now he was not aware of when to meet with government representatives and that it was after consultation that the NEC would meet.

Vanguard reliably gathered that the principal officers of ASUU, including zonal officers, met on Saturday at the union’s secretariat Gwagwalada to review the meeting with  government representatives and the offer so far made by government..

A source within the union said it was not possible for the national executive to call off strike without consulting the zonal and branch executives which will meet to get mandate from members before taking any decision.

Recall that ASUU declared indefinite strike on Monday last week over contentious issues with the Federal Government which included the non implementation of the 2009 agreement the union and the government entered into.

Strike Will End When Fed govt implements 2009 agreement – ASUU

07:33:00 0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said it will not call it off until its demands to the government are met.

ASUU had on Sunday embarked on a nationwide strike, which has reportedly grounded academic activities in about 80 federal and state universities across the country, over the failure of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 agreement between the two parties.

President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, told reporters during the week that members of the union would not return to the class if the demands it had itemised to the government last November were not implemented.

Ogunyemi said the strike would end “when the government is ready to do the right thing as we spelt out during our engagement with the government at the National Assembly in November last year.”

And when asked the least that the government would have to do to get the striking lecturers back to their classrooms, the ASUU president replied that an action plan involving about seven items must be followed.

He said, “The least has been defined. In November last year, when we went to the National Assembly, the issues were itemised, seven, eight of them. The government was expected to have followed that pathway, to follow what I would call the action plan for resolving the matter.

“But for deviating from the action plan, the government exposed itself to the suspicion that it didn’t mean well. If it meant well, it must go back to that plan and from there, we address the issues.

ASUU Updates: ASUU Cries For The Removal Of Education Minister

06:40:00 0
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has blamed all the actions of the body due to the laxity of the,  Mallam Adamu Adamu over what it described as his insensitivity and lack of commitment towards reversing the dwindling fortunes of the Nigerian education sector.
This call was made by the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Dr Ndamisa Mohammed Attaahiru.
According to him, the ongoing strike would have been averted if the Minster has been alive to his responsibilities.
He mentioned that since the current administration came on board, that ASUU has been trying to get access to Mr. President however the minster has not allowed such to be possible.
“He should be removed because you cannot stay in a place you are not doing your job. If he was very sensitive to the issues today, I don’t think this strike will have been called for. If his removal will bring prosperity to education because Nigeria is bigger than an individual in this country, we must move forward. If a minister is sitting down on his seat and sabotaging the efforts of education, I think he should be removed. He doesn’t need to be there”.
He equally confirmed that FUTMINNA has joined the strike and has withdrawn all academic services.
“If nothing is done after one week, we will reevaluate the situation on ground and move to the next option which is two weeks. If after two weeks nothing is done we will look at the situation and move to three weeks. If after three weeks nothing is done, we will go on full blown strike.” He stated emphatically.

ASUU Attacks JAMB Over New Admission Screening Model

11:19:00 1
ASUU Attacks JAMB Over New Admission Screening Model
The New Admission Screening Model is now a source of major problems. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, has faulted the guidelines released by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for admission of candidates into Nigerian tertiary institutions stating that JAMB acted beyond its powers.
According to the union, the Senate of Nigerian Universities has the mandate to regulate admission modalities as each university has standards which are not subjected to the whims and caprices of any government appointee.
Speaking, the Chairman of the union, Dr. Deji Omole, said both the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, and JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, first got it wrong by going against the administrative charges collected by institutions for post-UTME and later reversed their stand in their guidelines which he described as illegal and designed to favour children of the rich against the poor.
He mentioned that the point-based scoring system in the guidelines is not new as it has been used in UI 5 years ago and abandoned.
He equally stated that JAMB is only trying to cover up their inadequacies as its credibility is yearly queried. He pointed out that last year candidates were pushed to private universities against their will and this year JAMB awarded 40 marks to some candidates without justification.
He further mentioned that with the stipulation on the current guidelines many candidates will be disadvantaged and JAMB would have succeeded in entrenching corruption and further kill tertiary education in the country.

iaue-begs-asuu
The Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Professor Joseph Kinanee has appealed to the National body of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to recall IAUE branch.
He made the appeal when he met with the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Port Harcourt Zone Professor Beke T. Sese and his team who were at the campus to interact with their members.
The Vice Chancellor who stated that it would not have been nice considering his hospitable nature for them to come to the campus without him asking to see them. He stressed that he owes IAUE chapter of ASUU a great deal as he had enjoyed a peaceful and harmonious relationship with them since he came upon his present position.
He enjoined the Zonal Coordinator to appeal to the National body of ASUU to recall IAUE branch adding that with the good relationship established, he would assist them to make it materialise. He also informed Professor Sese and his team that plans were on to provide a befitting Staff Club for ASUU members to recreate after work saying that the Staff Club meant for relaxation and unwinding would reduce stress resulting from too much hard work.
The Vice Chancellor revealed that the IAUE Budget monitoring committee (BMC) made up of the chairpersons of ASUU, SSANU and NASU and others that had been inaugurated had been functional and working. He furthermore said that he had restored and paid up ASUU check off dues and promoted deserving Staff who were due. He congratulated the National Welfare Officer, Dr. Emylia Jaja for her position at the National level for the second time.
Professor Kinanee thanked the National body of ASUU for show of love, support and intervention in the well being of IAUE members inspite of the branch being suspended at the national level and promised his assistance. He commended IAUE ASUU Chairman Dr. Ugochukwu Agi for functioning and working for the course of the union even in the midst of the challenges.

He said that they had come to ask IAUE ASUU to take some vital decisions about members and was pleased and humbled that the Vice Chancellor asked to see them to reason along with the union.

The Zonal Coordinator pointed out that Vice Chancellors were first and foremost ASUU members and should partner with the union for the Progress, growth, development of the institution and welfare of members. ASUU according to him, was known for discipline and due process and violation of its rules was therefore not tolerated.
